For these a great many of the canvas work stitches are suitable and from the personal experience of many workers the following are selected as being particularly satisfactory, taking into consideration wear and ease of working as well as appearance:
Cross stitch
Long-legged cross stitch
Rice stitch
Tent stitch                                
Interlocking Gobelin stitch
French stitch
Soumak stitch.
This list does not pretend to be exhaustive. There are other stitches which can be, and have been, used for making rugs, and those who are or who become experts will find plenty of scope for experimenting with stitches, especially if they study Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches.
