On the other hand an advantage of the gauge-hook method is that an area of a given size can be filled much more rapidly with 6-ply wool on 3s canvas than with thrums on 5s canvas, and there will always be devotees of this method.

Short pile rugs, however, are more interesting to make as skill is needed to ensure that the pile is of even texture, and time has proved that they will wear equally well.

Many people start their rug-making careers using the gauge-hook method and after­wards try the needle, and I have yet to come across anyone who, having made the change, would willingly revert to the hook
