Rug foundation materials
The true Oriental rug is, of course, worked on a loom, the warp threads being stretched vertically and the weft threads passed horizontally in and out of these.
In the pile rugs short pieces of wool are knotted round the warp threads, and, at the end of each row, weft threads are run between the rows to hold them in position.
As regards smooth-faced rugs, in Kilims the coloured threads of the pattern actually form the weft, but in Soumaks a weft thread is run between every one or two rows of weaving and does not show on the surface.
