Methods
Rugs worked with a needle on a ready-made foundation fall into two categories—pile and smooth-faced—and it is difficult to say which type can exercise the greater fascination on the maker.
That being so, beginners are advised to try out both types, and, if they have the energy, different methods of producing the same type, either on a sampler (as previously suggested) or on a set of small mats, before embarking on a big rug. This is especially advisable if the ambitious wish to make a fine rug as their first large one.
To produce a really beautiful rug is supremely worth while but it cannot be done unless the worker is prepared to take a considerable amount of time and trouble over its accomplishment.
No good rug can be completed in a few hours; hence the importance of careful planning and selection of the method to be used as well as of the right materials.
