About rug making

For making fine pile rugs Brussels thrums, or "Worsted" as it is listed by some firms, should be used, and either Brussels thrums or crewel wool for fine, smooth-faced rugs.

Brussels thrums is at present about Is. to 8s. a Ib. while crewel wool is about 40s. a Ib. What should be avoided is so-called "tapestry" wool, sold sometimes for canvas work. It is very soft in texture, frays easily and is quite unsuitable for any type of rug.

When writing for special colours it is a great help to both customers and suppliers if bits of material (any material) are sent as patterns of the colours required.

The suppliers then have some guide as to the customer's needs and the latter has cause for a genuine complaint if, for instance, a saxe blue pattern has been sent and a royal blue skein of wool arrives.
